Camp Bestival: the festival with a foodie line up!

Music drifting through the August haze, flags waving in the breeze, sun kissed family sprawled on a picnic rug spread with food from around the world. After a morning of sword carving and willow boat making, circus games and watching acrobats walk the high wire we’re ready to eat. I dig into poached egg with gilled aubergine in smoky sauce atop sourdough toast. Mr A has the best of what DJ BBQ is spinning and the kids are feasting on simple sandwiches just how they like them, and cake from the WI tent.

I will let you into a secret, I only have a quick glance at the music line up for Camp Bestival, I am quite happy to trust that Rob da Bank has that sorted. Much as we love music, there is so much to do that we have often spent the whole weekend pottering and making stuff, dropping in on the odd band. But one line up I have had a proper look at is the Camp Bestival food line up – yes this incredible festival actually has a foodie line up –  because as a veggie and a foodie, the catering is a huge highlight for me.

Festival catering means we can try loads of different restaurants relatively cheaply – I use the word restaurant because the caterers truly are incredible  –  while the kids eat whatever appeals to their more limited palates. Mr A and I also have totally different tastes as a carnivore and a veggie. Everyone is a winner.

We’re really excited to be Camp Bestival Bloggers again this year. We’re displaying the badge with pride!

Last year we had a year off, and my goodness we knew about it. The kids didn’t stop talking about how much they had missed it, and I felt so sad seeing other people talking about it. I realised a weekend of festivalling is the perfect way to wind down at the end of term and really kick starts a summer of fun.


Lovely veggie round the world platter. Beautiful beetroot dip, tantalising side salads and tofu and a squash croquette to dunk in the dip. It sent my taste buds around the world. Just delicious.

Feast Collective Producer Gemma Thorogood says: “This year we’ve trawled the country for the cream of the crop with British Street Food celebs Seadog bringing their seaside popcorn to the fields, plus Bánh Mì from Pho Sho, buttermilk chicken from Butchies, and sweet potato pancakes from the Chocolate Bear Kitchen. Not to mention the extraordinary Eritrean tacos carefully crafted by Lemlem Kitchen, oh and Polar Pops ice lollies made only from real fruit and vegetables (with NO added sugar)!  I just hope I can get around it all in one weekend!”

The line-up for this year’s Feast Collective includes speciality chefs and streetfood gurus like Seadog, the winners of the ‘Best of the Best’ prize at the 2015 British Street Food Awards, or contemporary twists on traditional Ghanaian cooking from Zoe’s Ghana Kitchen and noodle burger fusionists Pimp My Ramen, plus real Southeast Asian street dishes and food to inspire happier living from Makatcha.

There’s more! How about Mauritian, Jamaican and Sicilian flavours from Coco Labelle, modern African fare including brunch from Lemlem Kitchen, delicious, vegan, gluten-free soup from The Rattling Pan and Vietnamese streetfood from Pho Sho?!

If you need any more convincing about the food line up, well Camp Bestival even has food ambassadors!

Steven Lamb who has been the lynchpin of the River Cottage operation for more than a decade; Children’s Food Ambassador, and former BBC Cook of the Year, Jo Ingleby, will be offering Children’s Feast Collective Tasting Sessions; Luke Thomas, the UK’s youngest head chef, who was just 18-years-old when he took charge of his restaurant in Cookham is the Healthy Food Ambassador, Tess Ward,  a Le Cordon Blue trained chef whose book, The Naked Diet, has put her at the forefront of making healthy food a mainstream concern.

It’s not just the food that is carefully curated, the drinks are amazing too, really great wines, lavish cocktail lounges and jam jar cocktails were some of my favourites.

Back to that beautifully bedecked field, kids happy, adults enjoying a cocktail wind down moment as the sun sets and the music plays….bring it on!
